What is soft tissue massage?
Soft tissue massage is hands-on treatment of the muscles, tendons and fascia, used to ease tightness, improve how an area moves, and settle the discomfort that comes with overloaded or overworked tissue.
At Gladesville Healthcare, soft tissue massage is used inside your physiotherapy or chiropractic appointment rather than as a treatment on its own. Your practitioner works through the areas that are actually restricted, adjusting pressure and depth as they go, so the hands-on work supports the rest of your treatment instead of sitting apart from it.
How much of it you have depends on your condition and your goals. It may be combined with joint mobilisation, dry needling, exercise rehabilitation, or radial shockwave therapy as part of a broader plan.

What are the benefits?
- Eases muscle tightness: Helps release areas of tension that contribute to stiffness and discomfort.
- Improves movement: Supports better flexibility and smoother movement through the treated area.
- Supports recovery: May help after training strain, overuse, or a period of reduced activity.
- Settles the area before rehab: Hands-on work can make the exercises that follow easier to do well.
- Complements your treatment: Works alongside joint mobilisation, dry needling and exercise rehab rather than instead of them.
Frequently asked questions
Is soft tissue massage the same as a remedial massage appointment?
No. Soft tissue massage is part of your physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment, done by your practitioner as part of the appointment you have already booked. It is not a standalone massage booking, and we do not offer remedial massage as a separate service.
What conditions is soft tissue massage used for?
It is commonly used where tight, restricted or overloaded muscles are part of the picture. That may include neck and shoulder tension, lower back discomfort, tendon irritation, repetitive strain, sports-related tightness, hip restriction and calf strain. Your practitioner will assess the area first and decide whether hands-on work is the right part of your plan.
Does it hurt?
Working through tight or irritated tissue can feel intense at times, but it should stay manageable. Your practitioner adjusts pressure to your tolerance and to what the area actually needs, and you should say if anything feels too much.
How much of my appointment will be hands-on?
That varies. Soft tissue work is one part of a treatment rather than the whole of it, so how long is spent on it depends on your condition, how the area is responding, and what else your plan involves that day.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Some people notice looser movement or less tension straight after a session, while others improve more gradually across several appointments. How long the issue has been there, and whether you are also doing the exercises alongside it, both make a difference.
How is it different from a general relaxation massage?
A relaxation massage is a whole-body treatment aimed at winding down. Soft tissue massage here is targeted at the specific area your practitioner has assessed, and it sits inside a treatment plan with a clinical goal attached to it.
Is it used alongside other treatments?
Yes. At Gladesville Healthcare, soft tissue massage is almost always part of a broader plan rather than used on its own. Depending on your presentation it may sit alongside joint mobilisation, dry needling, radial shockwave therapy, exercise rehabilitation or movement retraining, so the underlying cause is treated as well as the symptom.
